FROM THE PUBLISHERS
For many years we have not had a good newspaper truly concerned with the problems of America’s Lithuanian Catholics. The Lithuanian Catholic community in America has been left without a mouthpiece and so without a defender and leader. Misunderstandings about common matters have started to appear, and finally disagreements have arisen amongst Lithuanian Catholics themselves in some places.
We are publishing Draugas because we desire the well-being, love and concord of Lithuanian Catholics. The spoken word, the printed booklet are good things, but we live in times when it is not the oratory of a Cicero or a Demosthenes, but rather newspapers that protect against vice, teach useful things, and encourage good works…
Our
desire is to make Draugas
a true and influential guide for America’s Lithuanian
Catholics in their public affairs, of which there are many:
organizations, education, schools, emigration, material well-being,
sobriety, politics and hundreds of other things. May we be allowed to
hope that this work of ours will be fully appreciated and that Draugas will soon
find its way into the homes of all Lithuanian Catholics.
FROM THE EDITORS
The very name of the newspaper – DRAUGAS – KATALIKIŠKAS LAIKRAŠTIS (The Friend – A Catholic Newspaper) shows that it will be a dear and close friend of Catholics. It is very important for everyone to have a true friend in life. It is to a friend that we turn for help in times of misfortune, for advice in times of doubt, and for companionship in times of joy. How more fortunate is to have a friend who is also so powerful that hundreds and thousands listen to his voice…
Even though the name of the newspaper implies that it should be limited to Catholic matters, let us remember that every Catholic is concerned not only with spiritual matters. Let us not forget that every Catholic also wants to know what is going on in the world: for he lives with all kinds of people and so, despite religious, class, national and other differences, he should be concerned about matters common to all. What is Congress, or Parliament, or the Duma doing? Why did reactionary forces gain the upper hand in Russia, but failed to do so in Turkey? Why did French workers succeed with their first strike, but failed to gain the sympathy of French society when they called a second strike? Or the field of science! Is it not interesting to learn about new theories in astronomy, geology, and hundreds of other branches of science? And social issues: universal peace, national movements, issues of sobriety etc., etc. Is it not interesting for everyone to get to know all these things more closely? Is it not satisfying to see them in full light, to view them through the critical eye of the teachings of the Catholic Church?
We live in a foreign country, and Americans call us foreigners. Sometimes they even look upon us with contempt. To them we seem uneducated, unmanageable, tired, and backward. Let us have the courage to admit that we lack sobriety, that we lack an understanding of the conditions of our new life, and that we lack the know-how to get ahead in material affairs. Where are our Carnegies, our Ryans, our Morosinis? We don’t have them. English, Scottish, Irish, German immigrants have adapted to life in America and play important roles in the lives of Americans. Armenians, Italians, and Jews have influenced the American government to advance their viewpoints in other countries. But who has ever heard of such attention being paid to Lithuanians? Why is this so? Maybe it is because we do not deserve it? That is doubtful. Don’t we know how to improve our condition in a thrifty manner, how to save the money we have earned, how to run businesses? In a word, are we ignorant of economics? Draugas will thus try to come to the aid of its friends by introducing a section about our economic affairs.
Almost all American Lithuanians have not forgotten their old homeland and are acutely interested in what is happening in Lithuania. Therefore, we will have a section about current events in Lithuania.
We will not forget the little ones the younger generation. Our children are the future of our nation in America. We are opening schools for them. We are concerned that they learn how to read Lithuanian. But once the younger generation learns how to read Lithuanian, what will it read? That is why we need to introduce a children’s section. We are happy to announce that Mr. Ksaveras Vanagelis, the composer of the well-known song Kur banguoja Nemunėlis (Where the Nemunas Flows), has agreed to edit this section.
We encourage as many letters from our readers as possible, but we require them to be short, relevant to the community, and above all truthful.
We will publish this newspaper in the Catholic spirit. Let our mottos be the famous words of Lincoln: “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right” and the encouraging advice of Saint Paul: “Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of justice.” (Eph. 6: 14)
